Richard L. "Dick" Flagg

Richard L. "Dick" Flagg, 82, of Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of the Culver/Plymouth, Indiana area, passed away at 4:14 AM on October 26, 2014 at the Duke-Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dick was born on September 22, 1932 to Wayne and Amy (Small) Flagg in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Culver High School and then received his college degree in Business from Indiana University – Bloomington. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and part of the ROTC program.

After college, he proudly served his country in the US Air Force where he flew in B57’s as part of the Canberra 13th Bomb Squad based out of Johnson Airbase in Japan. He attained the rank of Captain by the time of his honorable discharge. While stationed in Tokyo, Japan he met and fell in love with Emiko "Keiko" Tanabe. They were wed on June 20, 1960 in Tokyo. After arriving back in the US, they raised a family of two sons: John and Michael Flagg.

Dick was a talented man. He worked in banking for Bank of America in San Francisco, California. He moved back to Indiana to help his mother with the family business, “The Mayflower” after his father passed away. He later became a co-owner of “Tri-County Beverage” in Plymouth, Indiana. He sold the business in 1998. Never one to sit around, Dick went back to work at the Marshall County Highway department before retiring at the age 65.

Outside of work, Dick loved golf and was a member of the Plymouth Country Club for 47 years and served on the board of directors several times. He and Keiko recently relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina to be closer to family and grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his loving wife Keiko of Raleigh, North Carolina; son John (Erin) Flagg of Raleigh, North Carolina, along with grandchildren (Jaeden, Kendall, Jack and Kate) and his son Michael Flagg of Plymouth, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside committal service will be held at the Culver Masonic Cemetery in Culver, Indiana on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Nancy Foster, Pastor at Monterrey United Methodist Church will officiate and military honors will be given. Following the service, please join the family at a luncheon reception in Dick’s honor.
