B-57 returned to original configuration: Crews at the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio have restored a Vietnam War-era B-57 Martin Canberra and returned it to the museum's Southeast Asia War exhibit. Museum staff converted it from its EB-57 electronic countermeasures configuration used in the Vermont National Guard by reinstalling the weapons bay, removing antennae, and repainting it.

I was at Ubon '70-'71. I was with 8thAMS and worked on the B-57G. The airplane was so ahead of its time that I was amazed in 1990 when the media was showing, as brand new technology, exactly what we were doing with the B-57.  I would love to talk to a pilot of one of those birds. Remember...only 16 were made and four of them stayed at McDill (sic). Any  of them that were at Ubon have my fingerprints all over them.

A friend of mine has a WB57 in Florida they are exploring putting back
in the air or to museum. It was a flyer 4 years ago but damaged by
Katrina and hasn't moved since. It's an A model with the underneath
entrance - if there is someone you have worked with in the past, crew
chiefs
or mechanics, i'd love to put them in touch with my friend.
More flyers are needed.

Alexander Wolf

A war story has been added to WAR STORIES.

I

Just a quick note, in the story by John Harris "Recon inVietnam"; the photo captioned "Max Minor  and backseater Phil?",

Phil is Col. Phillip N. Walker USAF Ret. and my dad.  John didn't mention any loss of aircraft in his piece, but Max and my dad were shot down a short while after this photo was taken.  Both were rescued, and Dad recieved a Purple Heart for sustained while punching out.  To hear him tell the story, it was no big deal and kind of amusing.  Just another day on the job except for getting blasted out of what was, up to that point, a perfectly good airplane. Then spending the rest of the afternoon playing hide and seek with Charlie, until the "Jollie Greens" picked him and Max up.    Dad's living in Stone Mountian Ga. and just celebrated his 74th birthday.      Thanks,   Chris Walker
Actually, the picture was taken as they returned from their final flight before going home. They were shot down before I got there which wasn't very long before this picture. If I can find more pictures, I'll pass them to Chris.

My father was Capt. William C. Mattis from Acampo CA.   He was stationed at Clark in December of 1964 and then to Bien Hoa in early 1965.  He was killed when his B-57 went down on March 11, 1965.  If you know of any way to contact anyone who might have known him, I would appreciate it.

There is a dormitory named Mattis Hall in his honor at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX.  They are tearing it down, but have given us the opportunity for his name to be used on a new building and of course we have enthusiastically agreed.  My mom passed away about a year and a half a
gago, and now I am trying to get in touch with anyone who might have known him.  He also had a friendfrom flight school (1953 at Williams) named Bronco Akelsich from San Bernadino, CA, but I think he was out of the USAF by the time Viet Nam heated up.   Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.  Charles Mattis (mattisc@acu.edu
